Thoughts from Widow Coach Jody LaVoie, ACC
Navigating Mother's Day as a Widowed Solo Mom
As Mother’s Day approaches, I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the multitude of emotions that this day may bring for each of us. It’s a day that holds both joy and sorrow, memories and longing, gratitude and heartache.
For many of us, Mother’s Day is a reminder of the complex tapestry of our lives. We may find ourselves feeling grateful for the presence of our own mothers, cherishing the moments we have with them and the role they play in our lives and the lives of our children.
Yet, we also carry the weight of loss on this day. We may remember loved ones who are no longer with us, like my own mother-in-law who passed away last year. Their absence is especially felt when they played an integral part in our lives.
And then there’s the bittersweet realization of the journey we’ve traveled as solo mothers. We’ve taken on the immense responsibility of raising our children alone, navigating the challenges and triumphs with courage and strength. We see our children growing and thriving, and we support them when they're struggling, a testament to the love and dedication we pour into them each day.
But amidst the celebration and reflection, there’s a void that can’t be filled. It’s the absence of the partner who once stood by our side, the one who made us a mother in the first place. The ache of their absence is palpable, especially on a day dedicated to honoring motherhood. Mother’s Day is also a poignant reminder to our children of the other parent in their life that they, too, are missing.
So as Mother’s Day dawns, I want you to know that it’s okay to feel all these emotions and more. It’s okay to celebrate the joys while also acknowledging the pain. And it’s okay to find moments of solace and connection amidst the complexities of this day.
Whether you spend Mother’s Day surrounded by loved ones or take time for quiet reflection, know that you are not alone. We stand together as a community of solo widowed moms, supporting each other through the highs and lows of motherhood.
Wishing you strength, peace and moments of grace this Mother’s Day.
